ELECTRONIC GEAR CHECKER Abstract of the Disclosure A functional gear checking machine for determining a number of gear characteristics from a composite input signal received from a linear voltage differential transformer is disclosed. The signal from the sensing transformer is coupled to a demodulation circuit which, in turn, is coupled to several types of signal processing circuits, each of which contains a memory, and each of which processes and separates the components of the composite signals in order to provide output signals that are indicative of the desired gear characteristics. More particularly, the use of successive approximation means in a system which produces an analog electrical signal that undergoes an analog signal excursion of a maximum magnitude in a particular direction from a reference level comprising the steps of estab- lishing a stored digital count that is translatable into an initial analog signal level that is of a greater magnitude in the particular direction than the excursion, reducing the digital count in the particular direction in digital steps until it is translatable into a reduced analog signal level that is approximately equal to the excursion and producing an output that represents the value of the reduced analog signal level.
