A B S T R A C T Process for taking out of operation a reactor filled with a catalyst for catalytic hydrogenation by a) reducing (and keeping) the temperature to below 300°C b) discontinuing the feed supply and replacing the hydrogen by an inert gas c) purging the reactor with the inert gas optionally together with a hydrocarbon oil d) introducing oxygen in the purge gas and increasing the amount thereof to a partial pressure of at least 0.2 kg/cm2 and e) opening the reactor.
