ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Merraptans are prepared by reacting an organic chloride or bromide with a mixture of H2S and ammonia or an amine at a temperature of 0 to 175°C. under autogenous pressure. The reaction can be carried out in the presence of a polar solvent. For example, 3-chloroprop???rimethoxy- silane is mixed with H2S and ammonia in methanol and heated in a closed container at 100°C. for 18 hours.
