ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides novel mixtures of polycyclic aromatic polycarboxylic acids carrying nuclear nitro groups, that are substantially soluble in acetone but substantially insoluble in water, and are useful in esterification reactions, and effective as blowing agents in well-known resins. The mixture is prepared by subjecting a slurry containing coal to reaction with aqueous nitric acid under specified reaction conditions, mechanically separating the solids in the resulting slurry, extracting the solids with a polar solvent, and separating the polar solvent from the extract to recover the desired carboxylic mixture.
