ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is provided for the bonding together by welding of the surfaces of similar or dissimilar metals using an explosive charge as the welding force. The method comprises supporting a first metal object by means of a rigid support and placing a second metal object with its surface to be welded close to the first object but maintaining a gas space therebetween. An explosive charge is detonated close to the surface of the second metal object to compress and heat the gas between the surfaces and so soften and fuse together the metal surfaces. The method may be practiced beneath the surface of a hydraulic fluid which fluid acts as an energy transmission medium.
