ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A down-hole hydraulic or mud motor of the type adapted to be connected to the lower end of a drill string and powered by drilling mud for driving a drill bit is described. The down-hole motor is capable of operating at a much slower speed than conventional motors thus enabling the use of conventional drill bits. The motor includes a Venturi system which creates a suction effect on the exhaust fluid thus increasing the effective fluid pressure drop across the working chambers of the motor. The motor also includes improved valving means and is also arranged to prevent large particules of grit and the like from entering the working chambers of the motor. The motor may also include a unique form of pressure balanced flap arrangement which serves to reduce flap to stator contact pressures thus providing for longer flap wear. Furthermore, to reduce the amount of vibration and shock forces reaching the bearings which support the rotor within the stator, a unique form of shock-absorbing arrangement is provided. An overrunning clutch may also be provided to prevent reverse rotation of the rotor relative to the stator. This serves to protect the flaps and also permits the drill bit to be rotated from the surface in the event of motor failure. A unique form of locking system is also provided for locking the rotor relative to the stator in the event of an emergency situation occurring. In order to activate the locking system, a heavy object can be dropped downwardly through the drill string thus striking certain components and activating the lock. The motor is also designed so that it can be disassembled for maintenance purposes and re-assembled with a minimum of effort.
