ABSTRACT In two-stage solvent refining of coal by mixing commi- nuted coal under hydrogen pressure with a solvent produced in the process for initial solubilization and reacting the mixture under hydrogen pressure in a second stage, the overall process is improved by enriching the recycled solvent in hydroaromatic hydrocarbons of 14 or less carbon atoms.
