ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Blocking device for vehicle reel-type safety belts comprising a rotatably mounted ratchet wheel having teeth and capable of being connected to the reels of the safety belts, and a pivotally mounted blocking pawl positioned for at times engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel for preventing rotation of the ratchet wheel in one direction. Actuating means are provided to operate upon an abnormal change of speed of the vehicle, a pivotally mounted auxiliary pawl being positioned for being pivoted by the actuating means into engagement with the teeth and pivoting the blocking pawl into engagement with the teeth upon acuation of the actuating means. Resilient means tend to retain the auxi- liary pawl into engagement with the actuating means.
