ABSTRACT A sulfide of a metal selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel and cobalt is chlorinated by introducing the metal sulfide into a liquid fused salt bath comprised of ferric chloride and a chloride selected from the group consisting of alkali metal chlorides, alkaline earth metal chlorides, zinc chloride, ammonium chloride and mixtures thereof, which bath dissolves the metal chloride to be formed at a temperature below the melting point of the metal chloride, and recovering the forced chloride from the liquid fused salt bath mixture. Chlorination can be performed within a temperature range from 150°C - 1000°C. The chlorine may be introduced as such or its source may be a chlorine donor such as ferric chloride or sulfur chloride.
