ABSTRACT An electronically controlled indicating and testing device for printing the value with franking machines is disclosed, the device comprising a micro-processor, with a plurality of stores, and electronic position- checking devices for the mechanical printing units. By means of the latter, the digits of the value to be printed, and the print selector, are compared with the values displayed and the check-symbols in the digital display, and the value is printed only if these agree. Moreover, the brightness of the digital display adapts automatically to the lighting in the area. Further- more, empirical values relating to wear in mechanical components are stored. After the unit has been in operation for a certain length of time, or after a certain number of printing operations, these values release a signal indicating that the franking machine requires technical maintenance, and may, if necessary, halt the printing.
