ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing triethanolmethane and 3- methyl-1,5-pentanediol which comprises contacting a mixture of 3-methylene-1,5-pentanediol and 3-methyl- 2-pentene-1,5-diol with a rhodium catalyst in homo- geneous liquid phase with the mixture, and in the pre- sence of carbon monoxide at a partial pressure between 25 and 5000 psig and hydrogen at a partial pressure between 50 and 10,000 psig, and at a temperature be- tween 75° and 250°C. Preferably the reaction is carried out in the presence of an organic tertiary amine.
