Abstract of the Disclosure A motor for use in mining machines comprises a ro- tor and a stator disposed around the rotor. The rotor inclu- des a core comprising conductor bars extending parallel to an axis of rotation of the rotor. The stator includes windings, the ends of which overlie ends of the conductor bars. A housing surrounds the rotor and stator to isolate the rotor and stator from volatile mine atmosphere. The housing inclu- des a first passage for conducting a cooling medium, and a second passage for circulating air within a chamber bordered by the housing to absorb heat for transmission to the cooling medium. The rotor includes a pair of end rings spaced longi- tudinally from the core. The ends of the conductor bars in- clude recessed portions mounted in grooves in the end rings such that radially outer surfaces of the recessed portions are substantially flush with radially outermost peripheral surface portions of the end rings. A weld metal layer ex- tends continuously around the radially outer surfaces of the recessed portions and the radially outermost surface portions of the end rings. The combined radial dimension of each re- cessed portion and weld metal layer is less than the radial dimension of the non-recessed portions of the conductor bars to provide an air conducting clearance between the recessed portions and the stator windings.
