ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Compositions and methods for rendering a part or the whole of a surface phosphorescent. The compositions contain a phosphorescence activator and a soluble resin precondensate. The compositions are applied to a surface and the precondensate then undergoes further condensation in situ to form an insoluble resin matrix in which the phosphoresence activator molecules are trapped sufficiently far apart from one another for phosphorescence to occur. The compositions may be in the form of printing inks and unlike prior art phosphorescent inks have the advantage of being non-particulate. Alternatively, the compositions may be in the form of paper-coating mixes. Paper carrying phosphorescent printed matter or a phosphorescent coating may be used for postage stamps.
