ABSTRACT Improved apparatus for obtaining signals from particles passing through a scanning aperture without extraneous interference from other particles. The apparatus is improved by providing a pump device interposed between the inlet and outlet chambers which operates to draw the particle suspension up through the outlet chamber and back into the inlet chamber. The flow created by the pump is such as to ensure that all particles introduced into the aperture device are caught by the orifice of the outlet chamber so as to prevent the occurrence of extraneous signals.
