ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for working up a reaction mixture obtained by nitration of cyclohexanone in the presence or absence of cyclohexanol with at least 95% w/w nitric acid at a temperature of not more than 90°C in the presence of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons as inert solvents in a ratio by weight of halohydrocarbon to cyclohexanone from 100:1 to 1:10, wherein nitric acid from 40 to 80% by weight is added to the reaction mixture in such an amount that the resulting concentration of nitric acid in the reaction mixture is from 60 to 80% by weight, at a temperature between 0 and 30°C and the nitric acid phase is separated from the organic phase, the latter being separated by distillation into 2-nitrocyclo- hexanone and unconverted cyclohexanone.
