PD 76380 Canada September 18, 1980 Abstract A medical (or dental) laser instrument which in lieu of prior art glass, quartz or plastic fibers uses a more efficient infrared fiber optic waveguide of a crystalline halide of a metal selected from groups IA, IB, or IIIA of the Periodic Table which is optically coupled to an infrared laser and, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, also to a visible light laser providing a visible indication of the point at which the infrared laser beam will be applied to the part of the body to be treated, whereby an infrared laser beam exit window of diamond or zinc selenide is sealed to the instrument so as to isolate the crystalline halide waveguide from the body.
