ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Acyclic or cyclic epoxyalcohols such as 1,2-epoxy- 3-hydroxycyclohexane may be prepared by oxidizing an olefin such as cyclohexene with air or oxygen in the presence of a vanadium catalyst having the formula LxVnXy wherein L is a neutral ligand; X is an anionic ligand; n denotes valence, and is an integer of from 0-2; x is an integer of from 0-6; and y is an integer of from 0-2, and is equal to n; but when n is 0, then x equals at least 1. The resulting 1,2-epoxy-3-hydroxycyclohexane, for example, is a useful intermediate in the preparation of catechol or resorcinol.
