-1- Abstract: The present invention relates to a single mode optical fiber having zero dispersion at least in the 1.5 µm band and a precise refractive index profile. The fiber can be fabricated from a glass preform for an optical fiber which is produced by a method comprising forming a tubular glass member having a refractive index profile symmetric around its axis. The method includes the steps of forming a glass cylinder having a refractive index profile symmetry around its axis by the VAD method in a separate step, drawing the cylinder to a desired diameter to form a drawn rod, inserting the drawn rod in the tubular glass member followed by heating and fusing them to integrate them together. According to this method, an optical fiber having a complicated refractive index profile is easily produced.
