ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The end-to-end anastomosis surgical stapling apparatus is actuated in a single step. The apparatus includes a shaft which is able to pull the stapling anvil proximally in one step relative to a stationary housing as well as a plurality of circumferentially disposed balls mounted in cage-like manner in the housing which serve to lock the sleeve relative to the housing. The sleeve carries the staple cartridge and is released to move with the anvil when the anvil clamps the tissue against the cartridge. Thereafter, cam surfaces on the shaft and the sleeve permit the balls to move radially inwardly releasing the sleeve for proximal movement relative to the housing so that the staples pierce the tissue for stapling purposes.
