ABSTRACT The disclosure describes a method of modifying the surface of hollow glass beads by treating them with a solution containing an organic acid selected from beta- hydroxy acids, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine tetra- acetic acid and/or a salt of a said organic acid. This method enables to eliminate a high proportion of any malformed beads which may be present. It also allows the bulk density of the beads to be reduced so that such density can be adjusted to within fine limits.
