ABSTRACT "Process for the manufacture of imidazole-acetic acid derivatives" Imidazole-acetic acid derivatives of the general formula I Image (I) (in which R1 represents H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, heterocycle or free or substituted amino, and R2 represents H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or hetero- cycle, or R1 and R2 together form part of a ring, and R3 represents alkoxy; aralkoxy, amino, mono- or di- alkylamino, pyrrolidino, piperidine, morpholino, aryl- amino or hetero-arylamino), suitable as intermediates for the manufacture of valuable medicaments and plant-protect ing agents, are prepared by reacting an amidine or guani dine of the general formula II Image (II) (HY representing an inorganic or organic acid) with an acetoacetic acid derivative of the general formula III Image (III) (X representing Hal and R4 representing trialkyl- or triaralkyl-silyl or alkyl or aralkyl). The trialkyl- or triaralkylsilyloxy derivative of the general formula III may be prepared in situ thus allow- ing the possibility of a one-step synthesis from the corresponding 4 halo-acetoacetic acid ester or amide.
