ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for homopolymerizing 4-methyl- pentene-l or copolymerizing 4-methylpentene1 and a small amount of other a-olefin monomers, wherein the polymeri- zation is carried out in the presence of a catalyst system composed of (A) a solid catalyst component comprising, as essential components, magnesiun and titanium, (B) an oryanoaluminun compound, and (C) a silicon compound represented by formula: R12Si(OR2)2 and/or R3Si(oR4)3 wherein Rl, R2, R3, and R4, which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrocarbon group. By the process, a highly stereoregular polymer of 4-methyl- pentene-1 can be produced without requiring prepolymeri- zation.
