ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A serious problem in size presses has been the splashing of the sizing or coating agent. The disadvantages caused by this have been further accentuated when the speeds of size presses have increased. Splashing problems are especially significant in on-machine size presses. In order to avoid these problems, a size press is disclosed comprising one or more coating nips. The web to be treated is led through the nips in a generally upwards direction. Coating agent supply apparatus is associated with the size press by means of which coating pools are formed in the nip entrance between the coating roll and the web entering the nip. In the nip entrance at least one filling piece is associated with the coating supply apparatus and placed in the coating pool when in the operative position. The filling pieces are made of penetrable porous or perforated material. The filling pieces extend across the whole width of the web and suppress the coating pools and prevent or at least substantially decrease the splashing of coating agent.
