- 1 - Abstract The invention provides a method for producing a glass preform for an optical fiber comprising jetting a raw material for glass containing SiC14 from a first nozzle of a multi-nozzle burner and a hydrogen-containing silicon compound with larger reaction heat than SiC14 from a second nozzle surrounding the first nozzle, flame hydro- lyzing the glass raw material to synthesize fine glass particles, depositing the glass particles on a starting member to form a porous soot preform having a controlled bulk density distribution and heating and sintering the soot preform to form a transparent glass preform. The method allows large glass preforms to be stably produced without cracking.
