A network interface (12) independent of the computer system allows the user's computer system to connect (46) to a network without the recurring cost and requirement of a network adapter directly installed in the user's computer system. The present adaptation of the invention combines two standard computer interfaces into a single external unit able to automatically switch between an Ethernet (16) or USB (14) interface without the necessity of an external power source. When a connection is made between the PC's USB port and the current invention, USB-to-Ethernet conversion (32) is accomplished. When the USB connection is removed, a direct connection may be made between the legacy Ethernet port of the user's PC and the computer network. When a new computer is procured the network controller internal to the computer system is not necessary, if a transceiver type on the computer system is supported by the invention's installed implementation.

L'invention concerne une interface réseau (12) indépendante du système informatique, permettant au système informatique utilisateur de se connecter (46) à un réseau sans que ceci occasionne les frais récurrents et nécessite l'installation d'un adaptateur de réseau directement monté dans le système informatique utilisateur. L'adaptation selon l'invention permet de combiner deux interfaces d'ordinateurs standards en une seule unité externe capable de basculer automatiquement entre Ethernet et l'interface USB sans avoir besoin d'alimentation externe électrique. Lorsqu'une connexion est établie entre le port USB du PC et l'adaptation selon l'invention, une conversion (32) USB-Ethernet est s'effectue. Lorsque la connexion USB est supprimée, la connexion directe entre port Ethernet existant du PC utilisateur et réseau informatique est possible. En cas de nouvel ordinateur, il n'y a pas besoin de contrôleur de réseau interne au système informatique dans la mesure où un type d'émetteur-récepteur de données est compatible avec le système informatique par la mise en oeuvre de l'invention.
