The present invention relates to apparatus and method for determining a characteristic, such as stiffness, of a log, stem, wood piece or other wood specimen. A wave generator 102 produces a frequency varying signal which drives a transducer 103 which is coupled to the specimen to impart a frequency varying acoustic wave into the specimen. A receiver sensor 105 detects the resulting acoustic wave and a transmit sensor detects the output from the transducer 103. A characteristic response 109 of the specimen is determined from the receiver sensor signal, transmit sensor signal and excitation signal using digital 107 and analogue 106 signal processing. The characteristic 108 is determined from the characteristic response 109.
L'invention porte sur un appareil et un procédé servant à déterminer une caractéristique (108) telle que la rigidité d'un tronc, d'une bille, d'une pièce de bois ou d'autres éprouvettes de bois. A cet effet, un générateur d'ondes (102) produit un signal à fréquence variable pilotant un transducteur (103) couplé à l'éprouvette pour y engendrer une onde acoustique de fréquence variable, puis un détecteur récepteur (105) détecte ledit signal acoustique, et un détecteur émetteur détecte le signal de sortie du transducteur (103). La réponse caractéristique (109) de l'éprouvette se détermine alors à partir du signal du détecteur récepteur, du signal du détecteur émetteur et du signal d'excitation, par traitement des signaux numériques (107) et analogiques (106). La caractéristique (108) se détermine à partir de la réponse caractéristique (109).
