A novel layered catalyst and a process using this catalyst are disclosed to selectively upgrade naphtha to obtain an isoparaffin-rich product for blending into gasoline. The catalyst comprises a combination of a core sulfated support of an oxide or hydroxide of a Group IVB (IUPAC 4) metal, an intermediate metal component consisting essentially of single promoter metal, or a compound thereof, selected from manganese, nickel and iron and a top layer containing a single metal, or compound thereof, selected from the platinum- group metals.
