A process for producing a protein having an .alpha.2,3/.alpha.2,8- sialyltransferase activity with the use of a transformant containing a DNA encoding a protein having an .alpha.2,3/.alpha.2,8-sialyltransferase activity originating in a microorganism belonging to the genus Pasteurella, and a sialic acid-containing complex sugar with the use of a transformant producing a protein having an .alpha.2,3/.alpha.2,8-sialyltransferase activity originating in a microorganism.
