Postforming a thermoplastic sheet, such as solid surface laminate material (SSL), to a substrate having a planar surface and an edge with a desired profile, by heating a portion of the thermoplastic sheet proximate to the edge. Adhesive attaches the thermoplastic sheet to the planar surface and edge of the substrate. The adhesive may be solvent-based contact adhesives or water-based specialty adhesives. The composite formed by the attached thermoplastic sheet and substrate may be used for counter-tops, vanity tops, bath and shower surfaces, furniture surfaces and the like. Heating of the portion of the thermoplastic sheet may be by focused line heating, conventional heating and a heat shield, a combination of focused heating and conventional heating, or by just conventional heating. The heated portion of the thermoplastic sheet is preferably between about 275 and 320 degrees Fahrenheit before bending. An optional protective film may be placed over the front side portion of the thermoplastic sheet being heated to minimize surface defects thereto. The portion of the thermoplastic sheet attached to the edge of the substrate may be finished by sanding and the like to enhance the appearance thereof. A cove bend in the thermoplastic sheet may be accomplished by heating both sides of the thermoplastic sheet by applying a heating rod at a lower heating temperature and a protective film between the heating rod and the front surface of the thermoplastic sheet, and heating at a higher temperature the back surface of the thermoplastic sheet with a radiant heater. The thermoplastic sheet is then bent around the heating rod until the desired bend angle is made. The cove bend may also be produced by placing a non-heated rod at the desired location of the inside cove bend and heating the opposite side of the portion of the thermoplastic sheet proximate to the non-heated rod until the thermoplastic sheet reaches a desired temperature and then the cove bend is made.
