It is known to mount sample tubes in a tube container in an analyzer, the container having a plurality of wells, one for each sample tube. Described herein is a tube container in which the diameter of the tube can be measured. The container has a tube holder (100) associated with each well (60), the ends (108) of each holder being biased together when no tube is present in the associated well (60) as shown at station A. On insertion of a tube (T1, T2) into a well (60), as shown at stations B and C respectively, the ends (108) of the holders (100) are spaced apart. A sensor arrangement (124) is provided externally to the tube container to sense how far apart the ends (108) are spaced and to provide an indication of the diameter of the tube (T1, T2) in a particular well (60).
