The invention relates to glass strands, particularly for producing organic and/or inorganic matrix composites, the composition of which contains the following components within the limits hereafter defined and expressed in weight percent: SiO2 50-65%, Al2O3 12-23%, CaO 1-10%, MgO 6-12%, Li2O 1-3%, preferably 1-2%, BaO + SrO 0-3%, B2O3 0-3%, TiO2 0-3%, Na2O + K2O <2%, F2 0-1%, Fe2O3 <1%. Said strands comprise a glass offering an excellent compromise between the mechanical properties thereof, represented by the specific Youngs modulus, and the fusion and fiber forming conditions thereof.

L'invention se rapporte à des fils de verre destinés notamment à la réalisation de composites à matrice organique et/ ou inorganique dont la composition comprend les constituants suivants dans les limites définies ci-après exprimées en pourcentages pondéraux : SiO2 50 -65 % Al2O3 12 -23% CaO 1-10% MgO 6-12% Li2O1- 3%, de préférence 1-2 % BaO+SrO 0 -3 % B2O3 0 -3 % TiO2 0 -3 % Na2O + K2O < 2 % F2 0-1 % Fe2O3 < 1%. Ces fils sont constitués d'un verre offrant un excellent compromis entre ses propriétés mécaniques représentées par le module d'Young spécifique et ses conditions de fusion et de fibrage.
