An optical time domain reflectometer module for testing a fiber optic cable and for use with a computer having a disk drive interface and central processing unit. The optical time reflectometer module comprises: (a) an optical interface which couples to the fiber optic cable and includes a light source for injecting a light pulse into the fiber optic cable; (b) a receiver for receiving portions of the light pulse which are reflected by optical features in the fiber optic cable and converter for converting the reflected light into an electrical signal; (c) an analog-to-digital converter for converting said electrical signal into a corresponding digital signal; (d) a controller coupled to the optical interface and the receiver for controlling operation of the optical interface and the receiver and for inputting and processing the digital signal; and (e) an interface for interfacing to the disk drive interface and allowing the controller to receive commands from the central processing unit and transmit data using the disk drive interface.
