The present invention relates to a method of simply and reliably detecting a defective hermetic terminal in providing for a passageway for leak detection gases such as helium. The capacitors are still mounted in a way such that they become a continuous part of the overall electromagnetic seal and the hermetic seal. This invention is particularly described for use in cardiac pacemakers (Bradycardia devices, cardioverter defibrillators "Tachycardia", congestive heart failure stimulators, neurostimulators, internal drug pumps, cochlear implants, and other medical implant inventions). This invention is also applicable to a wide range of other EMI filter applications such as military or space electronic modules, where it is desirable to preclude the entry of EMI into a hermetically sealed housing or shielded enclosure containing sensitive electronic circuitry. There are a variety of capacitor shapes that are readily adapted to the invention as described herein and automation. This includes rectangular feedthrough capacitors and a variety of other shapes. From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that a novel ceramic feedthrough capacitor assembly, which incorporates a leak detection hole so that when bonded to a hermetic seal it will not mask a defective hermetic terminal. Although several embodiments of the invention have been described in detail for purposes of illustration, various further modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not to be limited except by the appended claims.
