The invention concerns the technique of electric melting wherein the melting energy is dissipated by Joule effect in the molten glass bath by means of electrodes dipping through the bath surface. The invention is characterised in that the electrodes are immersed into a molten glass bath from a height h less than 800 mm and from a surface S such that the ratio h/S is less than 0.5 m/m?2¿. In another embodiment, the exchange surface between the electrodes and the bath is more than 0.075 m?2¿/m?3¿ of glass. The invention is useful for making glass-based products such as fibre glass insulating materials.

L'invention concerne la technique de fusion électrique dans laquelle l'énergie de fusion est dissipée par effet Joule dans le bain de verre fondu par l'intermédiaire d'électrodes plongeant à travers la surface du bain. Selon l'invention, les électrodes plongent dans un bain de verre fondu d'une hauteur h inférieur à 800 mm et d'une surface S telle que le rapport h/S est inférieur à 0,5 m/m2. Selon un autre aspect, la surface d'échange entre les électrodes et le bain est supérieure à 0,075 m2/m3 de verre. Application à la fabrication de produits à base de verre, tels que matériaux isolants à base de fibre de verre.
