-18- A cable trap for trapping animals is provided having a pair of arms coupled at one end by a coil spring for biasing the free ends of the arms apart. A slide is mounted on a first one of the arms for sliding movement thereon and for coupling the arms together as the trap is being set. The slide member includes a hook for securing a loop of cable thereto. In the armed position, a trigger mechanism holds the arms in a substantially parallel orientation with the slide member adjacent the corresponding free end. The loop of cable is inserted through a receiving eye in a free end of a second one of the arms such that an animal engaging portion of the loop extends past a bottom side of the eye. Releasing the trigger mechanism causes the coil spring to force the arms apart such that the slide member is displaced towards a coupled end of the arm for drawing the cable through the receiving eye such that the engaging portion of the loop of cable is reduced in size quickly and with sufficient force to kill a target animal caught therein in a quick and humane manner.
