A method is provided for making mirrors having enhanced reflective layer resistance to corrosion. The reflective layer of the mirror, typically silver, is contacted, preferably simultaneously, with a first solution containing a specific cation and a second solution containing a specific anion, or alkaline material which forms hydroxyl ions, the specific cation and specific anion or hydroxyl ion reacting to form a water insoluble precipitate on the silver surface. The mirror may then be painted to provide additional corrosion resistance to the mirror. The method eliminates the need for a copper layer on the silver surface and the method may be incorporated into existing mirror production lines as a replacement for the copper layering step. Also provided are an apparatus for making the mirrors and the mirrors made using the method and apparatus of the invention. A preferred cation containing solution contains tin (e.g., SnCl2) and a preferred anion containing solution contains hydroxyl ions (e.g., NaOH).
L'invention porte sur un procédé de fabrication de miroirs dont la couche réfléchissante offre une meilleure résistance à la corrosion. Ladite couche, normalement d'argent, est mise en contact de préférence simultanément avec une première solution contenant un cation spécifique, et avec une deuxième solution contenant un anion spécifique ou une substance alcaline formant des ions hydroxyle, le cation spécifique, et l'anion spécifique réagissant pour former un précipité insoluble sur la surface d'argent. On peut ensuite peindre le miroir pour renforcer sa résistance à la corrosion. Ledit procédé qui élimine la nécessité d'une couche de cuivre recouvrant la couche d'argent, peut s'intégrer à des chaînes de production existantes où il se substitue à l'étape de dépôt de la couche de cuivre. L'invention porte également sur une machine pour la fabrication desdits miroirs et sur les miroirs obtenus à l'aide dudit procédé et de ladite machine. La solution préférée contenant un cation contient de l'étain (par exemple du SnCl2), et la solution préférée contenant un anion contient des ions hydroxyle (par exemple du NaOH).
