A compound of the formula: (see formula above) wherein Y is -NO2 or -NH2; R4 is alkoxyalkyl wherein the alcoxy moiety contains one to about four carbon atoms and the alkyl moiety contains two to about six carbon atoms; and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, straight chain or branched chain alcoxycontaining one to about four carbon atoms, halogen, and straight chain or branched chain alkyl containing one to about foir carbon atoms. The compound being useful as intermediates for the preparation of antiviral 1H-imidazo (4,5-c) quinolin-4-amines.
