- 10 - 2,6-BIS(CHLOROMETHOXY-CARBONYLOXYMETHYL)PYRIDINE AND A PROCESS FOR PREPARING SAME A b s t r a c t The invention relates to the novel 2,6-bis(chlo- romethyloxy-carbonyloxymethyl)pyridine of the formula (I) Image (I) as well as a process for the preparation of this compound, which is a useful intermediate in the preparation of the anti-atherosclerotic 2,6-bis(hydroxy- methyl)pyridine bis(N-methylcarbamate) (pyridinol- carbamate) and other drugs. According to the invention, the compound of the formula (I) is prepared by reacting 2,6-bis(hyd- roxymethyl)pyridine of the formula (II) Image (II) - 11 - with chloromethyl chloroformate of the formula (III) Image (III) in a polar-aprotic, water-immiscible organic solvent, in the presence of a basic substance between about -30 °C and +10 °C.
