ABSTRACT The present invention concerns novel 5-substituted-1,4- dihydro-4-oxo-naphthyridine-3-carboxylate compounds of Formula I, a process for their preparation, a process for preparing intermediates adapted for preparation of these compounds, a process for treating infectious diseases with these antibacterial compounds, and pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds which are in suitable form for administration to mammals. Image (I) In the foregoing Formula R5 is selected from lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, lower alkenyl having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkylalkyl having 4 to 7 carbon atoms, aryl having 6 to 10 carbon atoms, and aralkyl having 7 to 11 carbon atoms; and symbols R1, R3 and R7 have the meanings set out in the specification.
