A telephone includes a control element (BE) for menu control. The control element (BE) is used to move a marker in a menu which is shown on a display device (S) on the device, and includes a flexible band (B) which is tensioned over at least two rollers (W1, W2) and which can be moved in at least one direction over the rollers (W1, W2) and a movement recorder recording the movement of the flexible band (B). The control element (BE) is preferably designed so that the band (B) can only be moved in steps and so that below the band between the two rollers (W1, W2) there is a push-button which can be activated by pressing on the band (B). In a method of entering a subscriber number in a menu-driven telephone, the digits available are displayed on a display device (S) of the telephone as a menu. By moving a marker (M) in the menu by means of activating the control element (BE), the digits of the subscriber number to be entered are first sequentially marked and then selected each by activating a selection key. In a telephone operated by this method, there is therefore no need of a keypad.
