ABSTRACT A device and method for forming a pyrolytic coating A device is described for the formation, by pyrolysis, of a coating of metal or metal compound on one face of a moving hot glass substrate (16) by bringing the face into contact with a gaseous reagent. The device comprises support means (20) for conveying the substrate (16) through a coating chamber (14), an ejection nozzle (10) for supplying and distributing reagent gas to the coating chamber (14) and means for discharging exhaust gas from the coating chamber (14). The ejection nozzle (10) has a slot (12) which extends transverse to the path of the substrate (16). The slot (12) opens directly into the coating chamber (14). The longitudinal internal walls (24) of the slot are substantially parallel to each other. The length of the slot (12) is at least equal to the width of the substrate (16) to be coated. The internal walls of the ejection nozzle (10) define a continuous convergent path, to cause the flow of reagent gas to conform to the dimension of the opening of the slot 12, the angle of convergence (a) of the convergent path not exceeding 14° at any point.
