A utility meter or other fixed device is assigned a permanent dialed number that is unrelated to the telephone number of the customer premise where the device is located. Instead, the dialed number is permanently assigned to a line termination location in the switch such that when the dialed number is dialed a connection is made to the line terminated at that physical location in the network switching system irrespective of the customer's telephone number. As a result, the number dialed by the calling party is unrelated to the customer's telephone number such that changes in a customer's telephone number do not affect the telemetry system. Moreover, the telemetry number could be selected from a specified range of numbers or could include a predetermined command digit such as *8 prior to the number string. As a result, the switching system is able to identify that the request is for a special service such as telemetry connection by the dialed telemetry number rather than by the trunk on which the call is received. Thus, the availability of the service will not depend on access to specialized trunks.
Un compteur de service public ou un autre dispositif fixe est identifié par un numéro de téléphone permanent sans relation avec le numéro téléphonique du local du client où il est situé. Ce numéro est assigné en permanence à un emplacement de terminaison dans le commutateur. Ainsi, lorsqu'il est composé, une connexion est établie avec la ligne aboutissant à cet emplacement dans le système de commutation du réseau, quel que soit le numéro de téléphone du client. Par conséquent, le numéro composé par l'appelant est sans relation avec le numéro téléphonique du client. Ce dernier numéro peut donc être changé sans influence sur le système de télémesure. De plus, le numéro de télémesure pourrait être sélectionné parmi un ensemble de numéros défini ou comprendre un chiffre de commande prédéterminé, par exemple *8 avant la chaîne de numéros : le système de commutation pourrait ainsi déterminer s'il s'agit d'une demande d'un service spécial, p. ex. établissement d'une connexion de télémesure, en fonction du numéro de télémesure composé plutôt que du circuit sur lequel l'appel est reçu. La disponibilité du service ne dépendra donc pas de l'accès à des circuits spécialisés.
