A hybrid single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/transmission coupled tomography system including an elliptical arc-shaped frame, an elliptical arc--shaped collimator subsystem coupled to the frame responsive to radiation photons emitted from a target organ of a patient configured to surround and position the collimator subsystem closely proximate an imaging volume encompassing the target organ. An elliptical arc-shaped detector subsystem coupled to and responsive to the collimator subsystem for detecting collimated radiation from photons emitted by the target organ. A plurality of detectors responsive to the detector subsystem for generating output electrical signals, and a patient positioning subsystem for positioning to the patient to at least one predetermined location.
