A method for increasing the perme-ability of wood which comprises subjecting wood with a moisture content (based on dry weight) of at least 15 % to microwave radi-ation at a frequency (f) in the range of from about 0.1 to about 24 GHz with a power in-tensity (p) from about 10 W/cm2 to about 100 kW/cm2 for a duration of from about 0.05 to about 600 seconds to cause water in the wood to vaporise resulting in an internal pres-sure in the wood such that the permeability of the wood is increased by partial or com-plete destruction of ray cell tissue, softening and displacement of wood resin, formation of pathways in the radial direction of the wood and/or by creating, on the base of destroyed rays, cavities in the wood, said cavities be-ing primarily in radial-longitudinal planes of the wood, and wherein the overall integrity of the wood is substantially maintained. A wood-based material may be formed having a permeability which is at least 5 times that of the untreated wood.
Ce procédé, qui sert à accroître la perméabilité du bois, consiste à soumettre du bois ayant une teneur en humidité (calculée sur le poids à sec) d'au moins 15 % à une énergie rayonnante à micro-ondes à une fréquence (f) comprise entre environ 0,1 et environ 24 GHz avec une intensité de puissance (p) comprise entre environ 10 W/cm<2> et environ 100 kW/cm<2> pendant une période comprise entre environ 0,05 et environ 600 secondes, pour amener l'eau contenue dans le bois à se vaporiser, ce qui entraîne une pression interne dans le bois telle que la perméabilité du bois est accrue par destruction partielle ou complète des tissus cellulaires des rayons ligneux, par ramollissement et déplacement de la résine du bois, par formation de passages dans la direction radiale du bois et/ou par création, sur la base des rayons ligneux détruits, de cavités dans le bois, lesquelles sont essentiellement situées dans les plans radiaux-longitudinaux du bois, et grâce auxquelles l'intégrité est sensiblement maintenue. Un matériau à base de bois peut ainsi être formé avec une perméabilité qui est au moins 5 fois supérieure à celle du bois non traité.
