A method and apparatus for generating plasma in a fluid. The fluid (3) is placed in a bath (2) having a pair of spaced electrodes (4, 6) forming a cathode and an anode. A stream of bubbles is introduced or generated within the fluid adjacent to the cathode. A potential difference is applied across the cathode and anode such that a glow discharge is formed in the bubble region and a plasma of ionised gas molecules is formed within the bubbles. The plasma may then be used in electrolysis, gas production, effluent treatment or sterilisation, mineral extraction, production of nanoparticles or material enhancement. The method can be carried out at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The electrodes may carry means to trap the bubbles in close proximity. Partitions may be present between the electrodes.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif pour la formation de plasma dans un fluide (3), lequel se trouve dans un bain (2) à deux électrodes espacées (4, 6), qui constituent un ensemble cathode et anode. Un flux de bulles est introduit ou établi dans le fluide adjacent à la cathode. On applique une différence de potentiel aux bornes de la cathode et de l'anode de manière à établir une décharge luminescente dans la zone de bulles et à engendrer un plasma de molécules de gaz ionisées dans ces bulles. Ensuite, le plasma peut être utilisé pour l'électrolyse, la production de gaz, le traitement ou la stérilisation d'effluents, l'extraction de minéraux, la production de nanoparticules ou l'amélioration de matériaux. On peut conduire le procédé à la pression atmosphérique et à la température ambiante. Les électrodes peut comporter des éléments de piégeage de bulles se trouvant au voisinage immédiat. Enfin, il peut y avoir des séparations entre les électrodes.
