ACCRETION COATING AND MINERALIZATION OF MATERIALS FOR PROTECTION AGAINST BIODEGRADATION ABSTRACT A method of treating a fibrous material such as wood to inhibit degradation thereof, which comprises inserting an electrially conductive element into the wood to serve as a cathode, disposing the wood in a volume of electro- lyte such as sea water, disposing a second electrode in the electrolyte, connecting the cathode and second elec- trode to opposed terminals of a direct current power supply source, and establishing a current to deposit a high strength coating of minerals material on the surfaces of the wood.
