The invention relates to primary alkaline cells containing a manganese dioxide cathode active material. Anatase titanium dioxide is added to the cathode. The result is an increase in the useful service life. Typically the anatase titanium dioxide is used in an amount between 0.1 and 5 percent by weight of the cathode active material.
