ABSTRACT: The invention relates to an air conditioner for ventilating and heating rooms, notably living rooms, com- prising fresh air supply and used air exhaust ducts which extend from the outside into the living room and from the living room to the outside and in which an air to air heat exchanger (3) is arranged and which are provided with blowers (15, 39), through which air is forced in and out. Further, provision is made of a heat pump device having a condenser (17) in the air supply duct and an evaporator (33) in the used air exhaust duct, as well as of adjustable three-way valves (43, 45). The valves (43, 45) can be adjusted to operate the air conditioner in a pure heat pump mode without direct heat exchange between the fresh air and used air flows and to a mixed mode providing ventilation and heating. This adjustability is obtained in that the valves (43, 45) regulate by-pass before and behind the heat exchanger (3). Only one three-way valve (43) is arranged before the heat exchanger and only one three-way valve (45) is arranged behind the heat exchanger (3). The valves (43, 45) entirely close in one end position the heat exchanger (3) and entirely close in the other end position the by-pass (47, 49). The air to air heat exchanger (3) preferably comprises a heat pipe device.
