- 46 - Abstract Described herein is a process for producing an alumina-fiber-reinforced ceramic material which has a high fiber content, high strength, excellent heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and thermal shock resistance, and features a high alumina purity. A filament yarn of long continuous .alpha.-alumina fibers having a high alumina content is impregnated with a slurry, which contains a water-soluble aluminum compound, an acid such as acetic acid or lactic acid and a water-soluble organic binder component, all dis- solved in the slurry, and aluminum powder of a primary particle size not greater than 1 µm dispersed in the slurry. The slurry impregnated filament yarn is wound around a core and then dried. The resultant green body is then sintered. A green body of a desired shape can be obtained easily, because its forming is carried out by winding a filament yarn or the like around a core. In addition, because of the high fiber content, shrinkage is small upon sintering so that a ceramic-fiber-reinforced ceramic material with stable quality can be obtained.
