An illumination device comprising an elongate rod (10) or strip of translucent material located within a tube (11) to define a gas space (12) therebetween, the rod having a disrupted surface by way of undulation (13) or striation (17), and a light source located at one or both ends of the device to cause light travelling along the rod to exit transversely to its axis. Primary diffusion occurs within the rod by total internal reflection. Secondary diffusion occurs within the gas space, and a substantially uniform light output is generated by the surrounding tube. For longer lengths of rod the striation may be increased within a central region (21, 22) thus to ensure uniforimity of light output throughout the length. If required, a beam of light may be generated by providing a reflector (15, 16) within the gas space (12).
L'invention concerne un dispositif d'éclairage comprenant une tige (10) ou bande allongée faite d'un matériau translucide situé dans un tube (11) définissant une lame d'air (12), ladite tige présentant une surface irrégulière marquée d'ondulations (13) ou de stries (17), et une source lumineuse située à une ou aux deux extrémités du dispositif de manière à permettre à la lumière se déplaçant le long de la tige de sortir de façon transversale par rapport à son axe. Une diffusion primaire se produit dans la tige par une réflexion interne complète. Une diffusion secondaire se produit dans la lame d'air, et une lumière sensiblement uniforme est générée par le tube adjacent. En cas de plus grandes longueurs de tige, les stries peuvent augmenter dans une zone centrale (21, 22), garantissant ainsi l'uniformité de la lumière générée dans la longueur. Si nécessaire, un faisceau de lumière peut être généré à l'aide d'un réflecteur (15, 16) dans la lame d'air (12).
